Scoliosis is a complex 3D torsional deformity of the spine and trunk (CE Aubin). It can be present from birth, develop in seemingly healthy children, or occur in adults. This condition can progress due to various factors, especially during periods of rapid growth or later in life.
The Schroth method will teach you how to adopt an improved posture and how to develop the strength and movement habits to maintain it in life (in your activities of daily living). It is an exercise method that aims to improve the postural component of the curve, thereby reducing the asymmetric loading and lessening the power of the progressive cycle.
Your physical therapist will spend time teaching you where your curve is located and will explain which structures are involved and in which way.
Once you understand precisely where your scoliosis is in your body, we then follow general principles of correction to improve your alignment in 3 dimensions. We condition and train you to be able to maintain the improved posture in your daily functions and activities.
Isha Chawla is an excellent Physical Therapist. I was referred for her expertise in the Schroth Method for Scoliosis, a challenging and complicated condition to treat. Her combination of precise exercises, clear explanations and sensitive hands-on therapy is very effective. She schedules more than enough time to meet your individual needs, in a very private one-on-one setting. Her practice is well-equipped, well-organized and responsive. Highly recommended.
